Rome - The famous Baroque fountain of Trevi in the center of Rome, which attracts millions of tourists every year, was ceremoniously reopened today after repairs. Hundreds of people came to see the water splashing. The fountain was under restoration for nearly a year and a half.

The 18th-century fountain is one of the most visited monuments in the Italian capital. It gained worldwide fame primarily through director Federico Fellini, who filmed the legendary scene from his movie La Dolce Vita in 1960. It is from here that the provocative shots of the main character, Anita Ekberg, refreshing herself under the gaze of Marcello Mastroianni, originate.

Tourists are also drawn to the fountain by the legend that throwing a coin into the water increases the chances of finding true love. The hundreds of thousands of euros (millions of crowns) that are collected annually from the bottom of the fountain clearly show that there is immense interest.

The need for a major renovation of this monument has been discussed for many years. Three years ago, the deteriorating sculptural decoration pushed the city into decisive action. Restoration work has been ongoing since last June.

The repair of the fountain was financed by the Roman fashion brand Fendi, owned by the French luxury goods manufacturer LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton.
