Leipzig - A new Holocaust museum is expected to be established within five years at the exhibition grounds in Leipzig, Germany. The project, which will be funded by a foundation created for this purpose, is designed by architect Meinhard von Gerkan, who is also responsible for the recently opened main railway station in Berlin.

The museum building will be created by renovating and completing the existing Russian exhibition pavilion at the old Leipzig exhibition center. The exact opening date is not yet clear, but Hans-Jürgen Häßler, the chairman of the foundation for the construction of the German Holocaust museum, has tentatively mentioned the year 2011.
According to Häßler, the exhibition of the new museum will focus primarily on the history and crimes of Nazi Germany. The supervisory board of the foundation overseeing the construction of the museum includes, among others, former German Minister of Justice Herta Däubler-Gmelin and writer Günter Grass.
German architect Meinhard von Gerkan works with his partner Volkwin Marg in the Hamburg office of GMP. The 71-year-old von Gerkan has more than two hundred projects to his name, among which are notable works such as the recently opened Berlin main station, airport terminal buildings in Berlin, Hamburg, and Stuttgart.
Museums focused on the history of the Holocaust already exist in Germany. Recently, for example, the Berlin memorial designed by prominent architect Peter Eisenman was opened, and in 1999, the Berlin Jewish Museum designed by Daniel Libeskind began its operations.
