Baku - An Azerbaijani real estate company, Avesta, wants to build the tallest building in the world on a system of artificial islands in the Caspian Sea. It presents its grand project on the website khazarislands.com.

The marketing director, Kana Guluzade, stated that according to the plans, a 1050-meter tall shopping center will be built in the island city, which will be 27 percent taller than the current tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The Burj Khalifa has 200 floors and rises to a height of 828 meters.
The ambitious plan involves the construction of 41 islands located 25 kilometers south of the Azerbaijani capital, Baku. The island city will include hotels and residential buildings. The residential buildings will have 18 to 25 floors, some will be on a special island connected to the main one. Two islands are to be reserved solely for luxury villas and residences.
Guluzade said that the construction of the complex named Khazar Islands will begin at the end of 2013.
However, it will likely compete for height supremacy with the planned Kingdom Tower skyscraper, which a Saudi Arabian investment company wants to build in the city of Jeddah by the Red Sea. The skyscraper will be part of the planned Kingdom City center. Its exact height is being kept secret by the authors, but according to previous reports, it is expected to be at least 1000 meters tall. An agreement for the construction was signed last year, and the skyscraper's construction is expected to take five years.
