Bodegas Portia is a new winery of the Faustino Group, located in Ribera del Duero, one of the leading wine regions in Spain. The project represents the first winery designed by Foster + Partners, providing an opportunity to view this building type in a completely new, unencumbered way. The use of the natural topography of the site aims to support the winemaking process and create optimal working conditions, while also reducing the building's energy consumption as well as its visual impact on the landscape.
The building, with a total area of 12,500 m², has a production capacity of one million bottles per year. The tripartite layout reflects the three main stages of production: fermentation in stainless steel tanks, maturation in oak barrels, and finally, bottling. The processes are controlled from a central point in the middle of the building. The wings, where the cellars with barrels and bottles are located, are partially buried underground to create the most suitable environment for wine maturation. In contrast, the fermentation wing is exposed, allowing for the release of carbon dioxide. The path rises to the roof of the winery, where the harvested grapes are delivered directly into the hopper bins: the building is designed to take advantage of the sloping terrain; gravity facilitates the movement of grapes within the building itself, maximizing efficiency and minimizing damage to the grapes. The concrete building is clad in sheets of Corten steel.
In Ribera del Duero, approximately 150 km north of Madrid, very harsh winters are common, as well as hot summers with modest rainfall. The deep overhang of the roof provides shade, and the building is also designed to regulate indoor temperatures, along with reducing energy consumption. By partially embedding the building into the landscape, the visual impact of the structure is softened, and passive environmental benefits are enhanced - the roof incorporates photovoltaic cells and the mass of the concrete structure helps to control the internal temperature.
At the heart of the winery is an elevated public gallery, which extends deep into each wing and offers visitors views of the various production processes. Between the wings is a well-lit public reception and administrative area, where expansive terraces with water features provide views of the vineyards.
