By the end of March, the extension of the Maidstone Museum in Kent, England, was completed by the London-based firm Hugh Broughton Architects. The new golden structure, costing three million pounds, embraces the listed building from 1561. Its façade hints that a treasure of 600,000 valuable items is hidden inside. The façade templates made of alloyed copper derive their diamond shape from the windows of the farmhouse, which falls under the second highest category of heritage protection. The extension primarily aims to prevent long queues and overcrowding in the historic site. In addition to exhibition spaces (the total area has increased by a third), the extension also includes a café and other essential commercial activities.
