Lord Norman Foster

In the vicinity of the iconic skyscrapers Seagram Building and Lever House, a slender sixty-story residential building is being constructed, designed by London architect Norman Foster. The 610 Lexington Avenue project was first presented in 2005, but had to be halted for economic reasons until enough buyers for one of the 91 apartments, most of which occupy an entire floor, could be secured. Foster's design will surpass Mies's skyscraper by twenty floors and Lever House by forty floors. It will also outshine both iconic 1950s buildings in slenderness. What it takes from both predecessors is elegance, rationality, simplicity, and purity of design. Unlike the bronze façade of Seagram Building, Foster's skyscraper will have a white façade with predominating glazing, which will make the entire tower optically slimmer to the very edge of stability. In addition to ninety-one apartments, the skyscraper will also offer 2,000 square meters of commercial space on the lower levels. The entire building is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
