In the scientific company Frauenhofer based in Darmstadt, Hesse, the building of the Institute for Strength under Operational Stress and System Reliability (shortened to Adaptronik) was completed in mid-November after three years of implementation. The design of the compact block with a golden facade was created by the Cologne studio JSWD. Adaptronik is intended to represent a research facility of a completely new type, which was developed after intensive consultations with many groups of experts. The building houses various laboratories, testing rooms, presentation, and seminar rooms that operate independently but are spatially connected to form a cohesive functional unit where all employees involved in the research will be mutually informed. The slightly elongated building is divided into three functional parts: supply for collaborators, an experimental zone with support facilities, and finally a section for meetings and presenting research results. The shimmering facade is made up of brass panels that are perforated with an irregular grid disrupting the otherwise very compact structure. The patina of the cladding panels also gives the facade a changing expression throughout the day. Unlike the rich exterior facade, the spacious interior of the research center is carried out in a modest spirit, with white wall and ceiling surfaces predominating, and gray industrial screed or oak industrial mosaic on the floors. The total construction costs rose to eight million euros. More information >
