Dubai/Prague - A year ago, on January 4th, the tallest building in the world was officially opened in Dubai - the 828-meter tall Burj Khalifa. The skyscraper has 200 floors (of which approximately 165 are habitable) and its foundations are 50 meters deep. During construction, 330,000 cubic meters of concrete and 39,000 tons of steel were used, and up to 12,000 people worked on it. The building's outer shell is made of reflective glass, aluminum, steel panels, and tubular ribs.
The tower, which is 14 times taller than the Petřín Tower in Prague, began construction in September 2004. It was built for the real estate company Emaar Properties by the construction branch of the South Korean conglomerate Samsung. The construction costs amounted to 1.5 billion USD (approximately 27.4 billion CZK).
The total height is not the only record of the skyscraper. The building also has the most floors, the highest occupied floor, a swimming pool, a restaurant, a fountain, and the highest elevator, as well as the highest observation deck, which is located on the 124th floor. It is also the tallest structure overall, surpassing the television mast in North Dakota, which measures just under 629 meters.
In designing the building, architects were inspired by the Hymenocallis flower, whose segmented flower resembles an orchid. The floor plan of the building resembles the open crown of this fragrant flower, which is widely cultivated not only in Dubai but also in India.
