New York – The New York skyscraper One World Trade Center (WTC 1), which stands on the site of the two buildings destroyed in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, welcomed its first tenants on November 3, 2014. The glass tower designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, which replaced the collapsed "twins," is the tallest building in the USA with 104 floors. The height of WTC 1 is 541 meters, which corresponds to 1776 feet, referencing the year of the United States' declaration of independence.

Discussions about the building that would rise in place of the terrorist-destroyed symbol of New York began shortly after the attacks, but the new face of Ground Zero was born very slowly. The removal of 1.8 million tons of debris from the collapsed "twins" lasted until May 2002; however, the process was complicated by disputes and ambiguities between the landowner, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and the investor Larry Silverstein, who leases the land. Ultimately, both sides reached an agreement.

The first architectural competition announced in 2002 ended unsuccessfully, as candidates held back "too much." Ultimately, the complex was designed by Libeskind, who came up with the idea of four new skyscrapers and a park that complements the museum and the impressive memorial, opened on the tenth anniversary of the attacks. It takes the form of two large basins reflecting the foundations of the "twins." Water flows down their nine-meter-high walls into a square opening at the bottom. The edges of the basins are lined with bronze plaques bearing the names of the victims.
