Beginning architect José Francisco García-Sánchez designed a holiday home for a young couple in the village of Las Negras in southern Spain. The cube elevated on thin columns resembles a realized dream of interwar functionalists, while its white closed form derives from the typology of Mediterranean houses. The ground floor living area, with dining and kitchen, is fully glazed and offers direct access to a vast outdoor terrace with a pool, from which there is an eastern view into the valley toward the coastal bay. However, the main attention was given to the northern façade, whose symmetrical axis is directed towards the main entrance. To keep the ground floor as open as possible, all facilities are located in a compact southern core. The bedroom and bathroom on the upper floor are surrounded by massive walls, and rather than a view, these rooms focus on good ventilation.
The young Spanish architect was inspired by the iconic house 'Casa al Villaggio dei Giornalisti', which was built in 1934 by the Italian modernist duo Figini e Pollini and can still be visited (albeit in a significantly dilapidated state) in Milan today.
