German architect Ole Scheeren, who has long been active in Southeast Asia, where he created a number of iconic buildings together with Rem Koolhaas, decided two years ago to take a step back and left the Beijing branch of OMA. A month ago, he unveiled his latest project – the floating outdoor cinema 'Archipelago Cinema' for the 'Film on the Rocks Festival You Noi.' Under the curatorial oversight of Tilda Swinton, floating seating and a screen were created on the lagoon of the Thai island of Nai Pi Lae, where enthusiastic audiences could watch films and discuss the theme of humanity and nature for three nights. Local craftsmen built the wooden platforms right on the beach. Scheeren was freely inspired by the practices of Thai fishermen when designing square rafts from recycled materials. After the festival, the floating cinema found further use among the residents of Koh Yao Noi in the Andaman Sea.
