The Rotterdam office of Rema Koolhaase won a competition for a pair of residential towers in the northwestern suburbs of Stockholm. A new gateway to the Stockholm district of Hagastaden is set to be created on the site of the current market. The Swedish name of the project 'Norra Tornen' translates to 'Northern Towers' in English. It consists of two 140-meter-high buildings with three hundred apartments, which will also be the third tallest twin towers in Sweden. The asymmetrically graduated mass is on the border between a slab and tower building, prompted by the ambitious construction brief. The building's façade is made exclusively of prefabricated bay windows and balconies. The rough concrete structure, with its coloring, references the historical buildings in the center of Stockholm. Construction is expected to begin next May. The Rotterdam office previously won a competition in Stockholm in 2010 for the international project Station City, which is another initiative significantly impacting the city's skyline. In this case, it involves the planned expansion of Citybanan, conceived as an above-ground extension of the underground tunnel world.
