Contemporary Paris literally thrives on Nouvel. Visitors to his freshly completed museum of primitive cultures have to endure a long queue. Two months ago, Nouvel's office won the competition for a new building for the Paris Philharmonic, and now the investing company announced that Nouvel has designed one of the blocks of the former Renault manufacturing site in the southwest of the city. Jean Nouvel knows this area well, as he designed the headquarters of the advertising company CLMBBDO on the banks of the Seine fifteen years ago. The Renault site is the largest development area in Paris, covering 45 hectares. The overall construction plan anticipates that 653,000 m² of new offices, apartments, shops, and public facilities will be created here over the next nine years.
Specifically, Nouvel's proposal represents the C1 block in the urban design, consisting of three stacked and rotated masses with rooftop terraces. The individual blocks decrease in size as they rise, and their façades appear increasingly lighter. All 40,000 m² of space will be dedicated to shops and commercial activities. Construction is expected to begin in March of next year.
