In central London, a new gallery has opened in the Vauxhall district showcasing works from Damien Hirst's art collections. The grand opening on October 8, 2015, featured a solo exhibition of painter John Hoyland, which is spread across all six rooms (the largest hall has a height of 11 meters) with a total area of nearly 3500 m². The long-term goal of the gallery, under the main curator Damien Hirst, is to share its collections with the widest possible audience, which is why entry is free.
In 2005, Hirst purchased a neo-Gothic estate in Gloucestershire, where he gradually stored a total of 3000 artworks. However, he needed a more accessible place to display them until he found a trio of historic studios from 1913 in the Vauxhall district of London, originally used for producing theatrical backdrops, but were destroyed during air raids in World War II and later converted into workshops. The reconstruction and completion of Newport Street Gallery were entrusted to the London studio Caruso St John, which added a gallery building with a raw brick facade and a striking shed roof to the existing structures.
