New York - The One World Trade Center building, which will replace the "twin towers" destroyed by terrorists on September 11, 2001, today received the first part of its spire. Thanks to the structure that will adorn the top of the skyscraper, its height will reach a symbolic 1776 feet (541 meters), corresponding to the year of the founding of the United States.
The spire was manufactured in a factory near Montreal, Canada. Nine components of the structure have already arrived in New York, while the rest is still being prepared for the journey. Due to the heavy weight of some parts of the spire, which in some cases weighs up to 70 tons, the contractor had to transport them by sea along a route of 1500 nautical miles (2778 km).
The 104-story One World Trade Center, whose construction has long been complicated by disputes between landowners and builders, is expected to be completed in 2014. It is already the tallest building in New York, surpassing the previous record-holder, the Empire State Building, which held the title since the destruction of the twin towers. Once completed, it will become the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere and the third tallest in the world.
"This project has truly redefined construction work, on a global scale. Whether it’s the construction itself, its execution, or the logistics," said construction chief Steven Plate to CBS News. "Don't forget that we are building a city within a city," he added.
On the site in southern Manhattan, where the two World Trade Center skyscrapers once stood, six buildings are planned to be constructed. At the same time, a transportation terminal is being created, which will connect several subway lines with the underground rail to New Jersey. However, the completion date of this ambitious project is still not in sight. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg previously stated that it mainly depends on the state of the economy.
In the World Trade Center buildings in 2001, 2752 people lost their lives. The perpetrators hijacked a total of four planes from American airlines. The first two planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York, the third into the Pentagon building in Washington. The fourth aircraft crashed near Pittsburgh. A total of 2982 people died, including 19 hijackers.
