Harry Gugger, a long-time partner at the Herzog & de Meuron office, who established his own firm in Basel four years ago, was at one time responsible for the conversion of an old power plant in central London into the famous Tate Modern museum. His experience with the renovation of historical buildings has also proven valuable for a project involving a skyscraper in Vancouver, Canada, which is to be built into a protected historic building of the stock exchange from 1929. The project, named "The Exchange," is spearheaded by a Swiss development company. From the historical base, a total of 31 office floors covering an area of 37,000 square meters rise. The architects strictly adhered to the stringent rules regarding height restrictions and sightlines; however, the result astonishes with its dominance at the expense of the historical building and significantly alters the skyline of the entire city. The completion of the Vancouver skyscraper is scheduled for 2016.
