London - The London skyscraper nicknamed The Cheesegrater has been purchased for £1.15 billion ($36.2 billion CZK) from the original British developers by the Chinese company CC Land. The iconic building commands some of the highest rents in London, BBC reported today.
The skyscraper, officially named The Leadenhall Building, was completed in 2014. One of the tallest buildings in London, designed by English architect Richard Rogers, stands at 225 meters and has 46 floors.
The purchase price is higher than the last estimate of £915 million from last September. This marks one of the largest real estate acquisitions by a Chinese investor in the UK. CC Land also bought Vodafone's headquarters in Paddington for £290 million in January.
The building is being sold by the development firms British Land and Oxford Properties. Construction began in 2011, at a time when the British economy was just recovering from a recession. "It’s a decision that has paid off," said British Land representative Tim Roberts. The purchase still needs to be approved by CC Land's shareholders.
