The Korutan village of Mörtschach, with eight hundred inhabitants, is located in the south of Austria. The newly designed cultural center in the village center comes from Thomas Lechner, who exclusively used local materials for the construction. The wooden structure with a dark facade rests on a base of mixed masonry. Its appearance is inspired by local farms and agricultural estates. The building features a modern spatial concept and also utilizes contemporary technologies. An energy-efficient pellet boiler heats the neighboring Schmutzerhaus (the oldest building in the village). On the eastern side, the entrance area on the ground floor is protected from weather conditions. The main communal hall with a stage can be expanded towards the square using sliding elements. A side entrance to the building is located in the basement on the west. The interior is dominated by light spruce and fir wood. The restaurant offers a panoramic view of the valley. The flexible layout allows for variable partitioning and uses, thus supporting a rich cultural and social life in the village.
