After signing the contract between the builder (the Austrian insurance company Uniqua) and the future operator (the French hotel chain Accor), a five-star hotel Sofitel will be created in Vienna according to the winning competition proposal by Jean Nouvel. The high-rise building on the banks of the Danube near Schwedenbrücke will contain 194 rooms (of which 178 will be deluxe and superior rooms, one presidential suite, and 15 regular suites), a spa and relaxation area, and a conference center of 1300 m². On the eighteenth floor, there will be a publicly accessible panoramic restaurant with a bar, and at street level, there will be three floors of shops with design and interior accessories. The first guests are expected to check into the hotel in just three years.
The jury that selected Nouvel's project two years ago wrote in its recommendation at the time:Jean Nouvel has successfully integrated the project into the existing built environment. He adopts the lines and position of the Media Tower from Hans Hollein, thus creating a real gateway to Taborstrasse. The solution of the building's mass gives a new meaning to the address Praterstrasse 1.”
