Vienna - Architect and designer Hans Hollein, who turns seventy-five on March 30, is the first and to this day the only Austrian to have received the most prestigious international award for architects - the Pritzker Prize. A native of Vienna, he received it in 1985, becoming only the seventh laureate of this award, often referred to as the Nobel Prize for architecture.
Hans Hollein is regarded as one of the leading figures of postmodernism and has dozens of realized projects as well as studies to his name (for example, the original design of the Guggenheim Museum in Salzburg embedded in the rock). His works are literally spread all over the world, with several of them standing in his hometown. Among the most famous is the Haas Haus, located directly opposite St. Stephen's Cathedral. This supermodern building of glass, steel, and green marble, which houses shops, a café, a restaurant, and offices, was completed in 1990 and caused perhaps the most protests in the recent history of Vienna. Hollein is also the author of a thematic amusement park dedicated to volcanoes. It is aptly named Vulcania, located in central France in the Auvergne region, and opened in 2002.
