British architect David Chipperfield has won the competition for a new landmark in the northern German port city. The 233-meter-high Elbtower administrative tower will become the tallest building in Hamburg. The administrative tower for 3,000 employees will mass-balance the recently opened landmark Elbphilharmonie at the western end of the Hamburg port, which is currently experiencing the most intense construction activities in Germany and contributing to more than a twenty percent revival of German construction. For the design of the façade shading, Chipperfield invited Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. In addition to colorful effects, the façade will also offer a moiré optical illusion, turning the entire building into a "kinetic sculpture." The completion of the high-rise building at a cost of 700 million euros is planned for 2025.
