House for a writer in London by WSD

In a tucked-away backyard in the Hackney district of East London, the "Writers' Cabin" was completed in April 2014, designed by a trio of recent graduates from the Royal Academy of Arts. The wooden garden house creates an oasis of calm in the midst of the metropolis while providing a warm refuge from the inhospitable island weather. The eastern side opens up fully to the garden, while the remaining three walls are snugly at the property line. The user is a writer and illustrator who chose the light structure made of pine and cedar wood for his retreat into a fairy-tale world. Despite its minimal dimensions, there is a fireplace, a small kitchenette, and a toilet, but the most important feature was properly placing the owner's writing desk above the north-facing skylight.
