The exhibition of building models by Adolf Loos, created by Prof. Yoshio Sakurai together with his students from TOYO University in Tokyo, includes 13 realized and unrealized buildings at a scale of 1:50. Some of the models are interactive – they can be disassembled, allowing visitors to directly familiarize themselves with the principles and specific applications of raumplan. The exhibition is on display from June 19 to September 28.
On December 10, 1870, an architect was born in Brno, who probably needs no further introduction. A promoter of modern architectural thought, a staunch opponent of Secessionist ornamentalism, and a distinctive personality who has indelibly marked the history of architecture, would have celebrated his 150th birthday in 2020. The National Heritage Institute has prepared a series of events for this anniversary, the first of which is this exhibition.
The Institute of "Human Environment Design" at Tokyo University has been dedicated to documenting the works of Adolf Loos since 2000. With the help of students, a number of paper models, models utilizing 3D printing, planning documentation, and digitized models have been produced here. To this day, one of the largest collections of Loos's architectural models in the world has been created here.
The models have been loaned free of charge from Tokyo University; they were already exhibited in the Czech Republic in 2019 at the Winternitz Villa, where their European premiere also took place. After a reprise at the Stiassni Villa, they will be further transported to the Czech Center in Vienna. Visitors will be able to view, among other buildings intended for the territory of today’s Czech Republic, the villa of the director of the sugar factory in Hrušovany near Brno, the Müller Villa, or the Winternitz Villa in Prague, as well as the so-called Last House, an unrealized project for a wooden construction house from 1932–1933, intended for the Prague firm Kapsa & Müller for serial construction. The models will be complemented by texts about individual buildings and a bust of the world architect by the Brno sculptor Zdeněk Makovský.
The exhibition is organized with the financial support of the statutory city of Brno and the South Moravian Region.
