November 30, 2007 - January 27, 2008 in the exhibition halls on the first floor of the Clam-Gallas Palace, Prague 1, Husova 20
The aim of the exhibition is to introduce the wider public as well as professionals to a prime monument of European Baroque, the Clam-Gallas Palace. It was commissioned by Count Jan Václav Gallas and built in the first quarter of the 18th century by the Viennese court architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. Other prominent artists also contributed to its decoration: the sculptor Matyáš Bernard Braun, the stucco artist Santino Bussi, and the painter Carlo Innocenzo Carlone. The splendidly lavish Count Gallas was a significant imperial diplomat serving in Rome at the time the Prague palace was constructed. Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach is among the foremost artistic personalities of the Baroque era. His previously unknown plans and proposals for the decoration of the Gallas Palace, supplemented by other drawings of this famous architect, will be exhibited here. Visitors will be able to see a total of 30 autographs by Fischer. A recently discovered fragment of the original planning documentation of the Gallas Palace, consisting of four magnificent designs for interior decoration, is a discovery of global significance. In the Czech setting, the work of J. B. Fischer von Erlach - one of the most famous artists of European Baroque - will be presented for the very first time in history. It has been an effort to rather complement and "revitalize" the authentic interiors than just to "merely" fill them with exhibits. In addition to the construction history of the palace, visitors will learn about both families of its owners - four generations of the Gallas family and four generations of the Clam-Gallas family, including their residences outside Prague. Attention will also be paid to the vibrant cultural (music, palace theater) life in the palace at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.
