Studio NEW WORK - Unofficial and Figurative

Svatopluk Sládeček comes from Zlín, where he has been running his own studio New Work since 1995. The studio's work is unmissable in the contemporary Czech scene; for instance, it was recently awarded by the archiweb server.
The range of projects from this young and nonconformist studio is very broad, from family houses to a pair of lookout towers (Brdo, Lopeník), which were recently completed and are excellent examples of incorporating modern architecture into nature while also connecting to the tradition of tourist lookout towers.
The public had the opportunity to become acquainted with Sládeček's “thinking” about architecture at the exhibition “Figurative Architecture for Beginners,” whose concept based on “figurines” of contemporary architecture was an interesting contribution to the discussion about the role and possibilities of contemporary architecture.
The exhibition at the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery will be based on this concept but will be marked by the theme of mapping and rescuing unofficial architecture, which is one of the important elements of thinking about architecture within the work of the New Work studio.

M.A. Svatopluk Sládeček (1969 Zlín)

He studied at VŠUP, first in industrial design and then in architecture. He completed his studies in 1994. Since 1998, he has been a licensed architect.
He founded the New Work studio with three colleagues (designer Vladimír Kovařík, builder Dušan Mikulášek, architect Slavomír Kuchovský) while still in school in 1991; it operated part-time for three years and has been fully operational since 1994. Arch. Svatopluk Sládeček is the only one from the original members who remained in the studio.
Currently, the New Work studio consists of Svatopluk Sládeček, Daniela Babíčková, Alice Šimečková, Petra Vašková, and Pavel Velecký. It focuses on architecture and design, particularly known for its implementations of lookout towers and highly individualized family houses.
In 1998 and 2005, the studio received honorable mentions at the Grand Prix of the Architects Association for the Town Hall buildings in Šarovy and the Lookout Tower at Brdo, and in 2003 it received the GP OA award for the interior of a villa in Kroměříž. Other projects include a family house in Rajhrad, awarded by Bertelsman publishing as the House of the Year 2004, a multifunctional building in a gap at Náměstí Míru in Zlín, and development in the gap at Hradební, Františkánské, and Krátké Streets in Uherské Hradiště.
In 2005, the New Work studio, in collaboration with the Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín, held the exhibition Figurative Architecture for Beginners, for which a catalog was published. In February, his contribution to the first Pecha Kucha evening at Kino Aero about unofficial architecture attracted attention.
