Kazuyo Sejima + Ryue Nishizawa SANAA

Japanese architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa from the SANAA studio, winners of the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 2010, have brought their work to the Danish Architecture Center (DAC). The exhibition of architectural models by SANAA is complemented by photographs by Walter Niedermayr. The exhibition at DAC is open from June 19 to October 1, 2010.

The poetic insight into the world and its translation into architecture is in the hands of the Japanese studio SANAA natural, simple, and at the same time inspiring and full of surprises. It evokes extraordinary spatial impressions in the viewer and does not leave the human mind at peace. Due to their refined and thoughtful style, these architects are among the leaders in contemporary architecture.

Their most significant realizations include the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York from 2007, designed as seven stacked "boxes" of different sizes, School of Management and Design in Essen (2006), a cube with irregularly spaced square windows, or the Christian Dior department store in the shape of a truncated prism in Tokyo, as well as the unconventional pavilion for the Serpentine Gallery in London.

The central theme of the exhibition in DAC is the latest work of the Japanese architects, the Rolex Learning Center in Lausanne, Switzerland. This building, completed this year, is garnering great success not only in architectural circles but also among the public, especially students who attend the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). The Rolex Learning Center is its expansion and a modern face that provides spaces for 21st-century education.

The exhibition also showcases other realizations of the SANAA studio and seeks to convey the light and playful style of the Japanese duo to the visitors. It offers a glimpse into the architectural world that continually expands and explores the play of light, the tension between exterior and interior, and the interaction between humans and space.

An integral part of the exhibition is the photography of Italian artist Walter Niedermayr, who perfectly captures the play of light, shape, and purity of SANAA's buildings.

The DAC exhibition was opened with a lecture by Ryue Nishizawa.

"SANAA is undoubtedly a shining star in the architectural sky, and we are therefore very proud to present their work to the Danish public right here at DAC. I am convinced that the Rolex Learning Center has set a standard for the coming decade. Rolex represents a completely new conception of space, creating a harmonious environment for life, education, and community. It will become an international symbol," says Kent Martinussen, the executive director of the Danish Architecture Center.

Aside from the fact that the SANAA studio is becoming a phenomenon in modern architecture, Kazuyo Sejima is the general director of the 12th Venice Biennale of Architecture, which will open to the public at the end of August 2010. She will be the first woman to take on this prestigious duty, and after several years, this part of the Venice Biennale will once again be in the hands of an architect.
