The Architecture Gallery in Brno will host the exhibition 8 + 8 from April 5 to May 5, 2014, showcasing 16 family houses designed by architects from the studio knesl + kynčl architekti. For their Brno exhibition, which is a sequel to last year's retrospective exhibition at the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery in Prague, they chose a theme that is abundant in their work and is also a "local" topic – family houses. With one exception, all the presented houses are located in Brno or its vicinity.

A family house represents a specific type of construction that harbors great challenges and considerable pitfalls. It is about searching for a code – the code of the place, the house, and its future inhabitants. The search for the code and its subsequent materialization. Individual situations are often similar, but the houses are different; at other times, the houses are similar, but the situations differ. One could continue to explore the connections and correlations indefinitely. However, certain kinships can be traced in the designs – the effort to evoke a specific atmosphere using basic architectural means – light and space. The aim is for a readable layout and geometrically clear volume with rational arrangement and construction solution.

The exhibition is divided into two parts – white presents 8 realizations and black presents 8 projects. However, the division is not as black-and-white as it may seem at first glance. The projects are at different stages of development. Some are in the design phase, others are preparing for realization, and some may never be built. There are also houses nearly completed that find themselves in the "black" section simply because they are missing a little something, or – quite prosaically – have not yet been photographed.

The exhibition opening will take place on Friday, April 4, 2014, at 7 PM at the Architecture Gallery in Brno. The exhibition will last until May 5, 2014 and will be open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM. A guided tour with a lecture will take place on April 29, 2014, at 7:00 PM. A catalog in the Czech language will be published for the exhibition.
