The aim of the exhibition "Methods of Planning and Construction" is to showcase the previous nine years of activity of the architecture uncomfortable workshop (AUW), through objects created in their workshop and texts written by its members. The installation consists of three main themes that currently interest them the most: the duality of architectural design, the joy of work, and the relationship between architect and builder. These ideas can be found expressed in three texts interspersed with the exhibited objects, furniture, drawings, photographs, and sculptures. All together creates an atmosphere that brings us closer to the thinking of AUW.
The objects in the space are remnants of AUW's works. In their everyday life, these objects are used throughout the office and workshop space. By transferring these objects to Gallery VI PER, there was an effort to create the feeling of the everyday architectural environment of AUW. Drafts and plans are placed in two separate main rooms. In the center of the space on a golden table are wax models of small houses. For this occasion, a library was made that will remain empty until the end of the exhibition, when it will be filled with books about AUW's work, published by Gallery VI PER. There are also three video essays created by Anna Zsoldos about three people (a carpenter, a mason, and a tiler) who work in different areas of the construction industry in Hungary. These are interviews filmed with three builders in their homes. The video essays are sketches of their own thoughts on architecture and motivation in their work.
"In addition to creating architectural designs, we always try to experiment in our small projects. One of the greatest motivations for us is the process of understanding contemporary vernacular architecture. We also constantly seek situations where there is a coincidence between comfort and real human needs. Over the years, as we have participated in the realization of buildings and the production of objects and furniture, our concept of design has changed significantly. Our main interest now lies in visual simplicity, specifically in straightforward construction processes that are then reflected in the buildings. The construction process affects the resulting object. Through designing, we seek a comfortable situation: the main aspect of architectural design for us is not form or function, but the situation where there is a balance between a person and their environment. This balance is our definition of architecture. Everything else is just a consequence of it."
architecture uncomfortable workshop is an architectural studio founded in 2012 in Budapest by a group of young architects.
