Jablonec nad Nisou – In June, a large exhibition in the Upper Square will culminate a project called City Interventions Jablonec nad Nisou, which has lasted for more than a year. A total of 25 architectural teams from across the country will present 50 small proposals for improving the public space of the city.
On Friday, June 7, 2013, at 19:30, the City Interventions exhibition will be opened at the Upper Square in Jablonec nad Nisou. For two weeks, large-format panels will showcase the proposals that architects have developed without any claim to remuneration and are now donating to the city as a gift. At 18:00, there will be a lecture by Bratislava architect and co-author of the City Interventions idea, Matúš Vallo, at the Vladimír Bookstore Serius. The exhibition will conclude with a guided tour featuring the authors on Sunday, June 23, 2013, at 15:00 on the Upper Square in Jablonec nad Nisou.
The themes of the proposals were chosen by the architects themselves. Some based their choices on detailed knowledge of the area, while others chose according to the impressions the city left on them during a guided walk organized by the hosts last autumn. Input from citizens, who have been sending suggestions for improvement sites for over six months, also served as inspirational material.
Several proposals have been centered around the area of arrival to the city: the intersection at the Green Tree, the bus station, its surroundings, and connections to the center. There are proposals to address places along the Nisa River or to cultivate overlooked and unused spaces in the heart of the city. A frequently discussed topic is also the footbridge in Mšeno, for which three different proposals have been submitted. The Upper Square was chosen as the site for the exhibition not by chance. Like the presented proposals, the whole exhibition aims to draw attention to the untapped qualities of this largest square in Jablonec.
The curator of the exhibition, architecture critic and native of Jablonec, Karolína Jirkalová, has supplemented all proposals with questions intended to spark discussions about both the specific proposal and the addressed location and its problems.
The format of City Interventions has already taken place in Bratislava, Prague, Brno, and Košice and has received great acclaim from the public, politicians, and the authors of the proposals themselves. Jablonec nad Nisou is the first smaller city where the event has occurred. The appeal of this format is also evidenced by the recently launched interventions in Kladno and those planned in Plzeň and neighboring Liberec.
On how the entire idea of City Interventions originated and what impact it can have on urban environments and the thinking about them, the aforementioned Bratislava architects Matúš Vallo and Oliver Sadovský will lecture at Vladimír Bookstore Serius on June 7, 2013, at 18:00, prior to the exhibition opening.
