Zlín - The Regional Gallery of Fine Arts in Zlín presents a selection of works by architects Věra and Vladimír Machonin. The exhibition showcases the couple's works from the 1960s and 1970s, which represent their peak period. Visitors can see period photographs of the buildings that were created at that time, and they can compare their original and current appearances, informed ČTK the gallery spokesperson Marika Blažková. The Machonins are the authors of the Kotva department store in Prague, the House of Housing Culture in Prague, the Thermal hotel complex in Karlovy Vary, and the building of the Czech Embassy in Berlin. Displayed are plans, drawings, a competition model of the spa complex in Karlovy Vary, a model of the Kotva department store, and several pieces of original furniture from the interiors of Thermal and the House of Housing Culture. The impetus for organizing the exhibition was the condition of the buildings designed by the Machonins after more than thirty years of operation, as numerous reconstructions had harmed them in many cases. The most significant projects were created by the Machonins in the Alfa studio at the end of the 1960s, which was led by Vladimír Machonin. They won several public architectural competitions; however, the buildings based on their designs were realized only in the period when the couple had limited architectural and publishing activities because they did not sign a consent to the Soviet occupation. The aim of the presentation, prepared by the Prague Gallery Jaroslava Fragnera, is also to show that the mass association of all architecture of the 1970s with the communist regime is unjustified, stated Blažková. The exhibition, which is part of a cycle dedicated to the architecture of the second half of the 20th century, will last until December 9.
