The Gallery of Architecture Brno will participate for the first time this year in the Archikultura 2015 festival, which has grown from the Ostrava activities of the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava and the Cabinet of Architecture Ostrava to a nationwide event dedicated to the presentation of contemporary architecture in its seventh edition. The Gallery of Architecture Brno will present the work of the significant Polish architect Jakub Szczęsny as part of Archikultura 2015, including the media and globally already known “Keret House,” which has been referred to as “the narrowest house in the world.” Nearly twenty of this creative architect's latest works will also be presented together.

Keret House,” referred to as the narrowest house in the world, is such a remarkable project that it was recently included in the collection of contemporary architecture by the prestigious Museum of Modern Art in New York (MoMA) and was thus part of the presentation of new collection acquisitions as part of the exhibition “Conceptions of Space,” which was held there from July 4 to October 19, 2014. With a slight time lag, the Brno cultural public will also have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with this project and other works by Jakub Szczęsny.

"For the project of the hermitage-studio for Israeli writer Etgar Keret, a seemingly unsuitable plot was predetermined, a gap between two residential buildings in the Warsaw district of Wola. This not-so-ideal situation was a challenge and motivation to find an original solution, the result of which is an artistic installation, where the architectural object became a perfect communication medium for spreading the artistic idea,” states Gabriel Kurtis, Director of the Gallery of Architecture.

"I do not focus only on the design process," explains Szczęsny – "I am much more attracted to finding the hidden uniqueness that each project carries within. The Keret House is a residential abode intended for artists, where nine visual artists and writers will soon rotate. With this project, Warsaw gained a sort of globally perceived billboard, as Keret’s house has been mentioned all over the world. The artistic installation and at the same time a residential object with an area of only 14 m² connects two other buildings from different epochs, and it has 'awakened' the local residents. They show the house to tourists and tell stories about it. And it is precisely such transformations that invigorate activity in local communities that matter to me most,” adds Jakub Szczęsny.

Jakub Szczęsny – a Polish architect born in 1973, is a co-founder of the architectural studio Centrala. From 1993 to 2001, he studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology and also at the Escuela Tecnica Superior D’Arquitectura de Barcelona and Ecoled’Architecture Paris la Defense. Concurrently, in collaboration with the Studio DECO group, he realized a number of interiors for shops and private apartments. In 2001, he, along with Krzysztof Banaszewski, Małgorzata Kuciewicz, and Jan Strumiłło, founded the studio Centrala, as an association that wants to operate mainly in the fields of building architecture and interiors, urbanism, and lastly, also aims to engage in architectural criticism. Centrala is understood as a kind of space where the exchange of ideas and thoughts occurs; Jakub Szczęsny also works individually outside of the design association, with his work stemming from a conglomerate of solid scientific and artistic preparation.
Szczęsny's work is characterized by exceptional creativity and wit, even where other architects lose their mood due to numerous adverse circumstances and prefer to withdraw from their commitments. He does not shy away from small commissions or temporary installations; his exceptional and playful approach transforms these matters into remarkable and attractive topics with significant media impact and social effect. His drawings and comics enhance everything's attractiveness, as he simply and originally expresses the essence of his concepts. We can encounter Jakub Szczęsny's designs and works not only in his native Poland but also in Israel, Palestine, Australia, Turkey, Germany, India, and the USA.

The exhibition is under the patronage of Anna Olszewska, the Consul General of the Polish Republic in Ostrava. The exhibition will be opened by Jakub Szczęsny and the director of the ARCHIKULTURA 2015 festival, Tadeáš Goryczka, on Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at 5:00 PM in the Gallery of Architecture Brno.
