The Brno Architecture Gallery, in collaboration with the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery, presents an exhibition of the significant figure in contemporary world architecture Kengo Kuma. The exhibition titled Woven will showcase 15 of Kuma's recent projects with an emphasis on the European continent (e.g., the famous FRAC museum in Marseille, the Entrepot Macdonald educational and sports complex in Paris, the Center for Musical Arts in Granada, and the new exhibition park in Chartres). The exhibition is a demonstration of Kuma's sensitive work with traditional Japanese building materials and modern technologies.
Kengo Kuma is a world-renowned Japanese architect who has a studio, Kengo Kuma & Associates, in Tokyo and since 2008 also in Paris. Among his most famous works are the Yusuhara Wooden Bridge Museum, Water/Glass (AIA Benedictus Award), Stage in Forest, Asakusa, Research Center at the Prostho GC Museum, Sunny Hills Japan, the Ginzan 'Shirogane-yu' Baths, Sake No Hana restaurant, Green Cast, and the Toyoma Center for Performance Arts (Architectural Institute of Japan Annual Award). Current works include Kabukiza, the Besancon Arts and Culture Center, and FRAC in Marseille. In his work, he advocates for a relational approach to architecture, based on respect for the environment and harmony with its natural state, rather than a pursuit to dominate it with a dominant structure. In 2015, he was selected as the architect for the Olympic Stadium for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Kuma is also the author of several publications (such as Anti-Object, and more recently, Natural Architecture and Small Architecture), which have gained wide readership worldwide.
We warmly invite you to the opening of the exhibition with the participation of Elise Fauquembergue from KENGO KUMA & ASSOCIATES on Thursday, January 12, 2017, at 6:00 PM at the Brno Architecture Gallery, Starobrněnská 18.
