Architectural Solution of the Exhibition
The wish of the exhibition curator Dita Hálová was to display as many objects as possible from the very diverse work of Pravoslav Rada. The preliminary number of exhibits was set at around 150, of various types, forms, and sizes.
The search for inspiration led us to ceramic studios, where we were greatly struck by high shelves and racks often literally overflowing with artistic production. The basic idea was thus to transfer this object into the gallery space in as simple and comprehensible a form as possible.
We decided to divide the entire exhibition hall space at UPM diagonally with a block approximately 20 meters long and 5 meters wide in which we placed all the exhibited works. We wanted to leave the walls empty. The shelf was further divided during the realization of the exhibition and the selection of exhibits. The optimal dimension for one section was 1.4m. The vertical division in the basis was approximately 0.5m.
The advantage of this solution was the “involvement” of the raised floor of the hall using the exhibition system. Moreover, it offered high capacity with a relatively small “occupied” floor area, as well as variability and the possibility of partial changes even shortly before the exhibition opened.
The construction and visual material consists of raw MDF boards with a thickness of 22mm. The columns are doubled for load-bearing capacity and deflections. Some places in the shelf are glazed.
The collaboration with Tereza Hejmová and Jan Matoušek, who took care of the graphic visual style of the exhibition, was excellent.

Pravoslav Rada ― Ceramic Work

Pravoslav Rada, a classic of Czech ceramics, has devoted his entire life primarily to studio creations of figurative sculptures: animal (fish, cats, and birds), mythical (elves, angels, and archangels), and human forms. Rada's extensive and diverse work carries wit, exaggeration, subtle irony, detachment, and wise reflection. The author uses a wide range of ceramic materials, including porcelain and their surface treatments. He is not afraid to contrast vibrant colors of glazes, apply transfers, or transfer photographs (e.g., the duo Suchý and Šlitr). He has created a number of sculpturally inventive realizations that have enriched public spaces such as cultural and shopping centers, schools, or housing estates. These objects, like his smaller sculptures, are striking, instantly identifiable, and, above all, highly original.

The exhibition at UPM is intended for all generations: the oldest will recall the times when Czech ceramics were at their artistic peak, the young and middle-aged will be alerted to the fact that even contemporary visual art can be communicative and comprehensible, and the youngest will be delighted by the playfulness and energy with which Rada creates his works.

The exhibition is accompanied by a program (guided tours, lectures, and other events) and a publication.
