Prague - Artist and architect Bořek Šípek together with his students from the Technical University in Liberec presented works from the unconventional studio Environmental Design, which connects architecture and industrial design. Designs for public spaces, models, photographs, videos, and other objects reach up to the highest floors of the New Town Hall in Prague. They will remain there until the end of October. The exhibition is titled Three Hundred Sixty Degrees and includes dozens of works and projects signed by students from the studio, which was established six years ago at the Faculty of Art and Architecture at the Technical University in Liberec. The dean there, Czech architect and artist Bořek Šípek, is the initiator of the establishment of the studio. Apart from him, the well-known Czech cameraman Jaroslav Brabec also works in Liberec. "I tried to fill the gap that exists between architecture and design. The exhibition showcases the best works of our students from the past six years," Šípek told ČTK, who illustrated the studio’s approach with a practical example: "Dealing with the functionality of a park for architects is often not as interesting as building a house. Designers often can't even reach these commissions at all." Young designers and architects filled the gap between the two fields with, for example, designs for urban furniture, installations in public spaces, or a stylish chair for the prime minister that "cannot be sat on." Some of the exhibited student works take the form of design stickers that help the visually impaired navigate their surroundings, while others reflect current social and political events - for instance, the connection of former president Václav Havel and the current head of state Václav Klaus into a single figure. The purpose of the exhibition is to show the public, especially young students, what the studio offers and what its students create. According to Šípek, they find applications in creative and advisory teams in ministries or cities. "A similar studio has been functioning for ten years in the Netherlands, where it enjoys great success. Young people from all over the world study there, including from Japan and the United States. We would like to reach a similar position in Liberec," Šípek added. The exhibition Three Hundred Sixty Degrees will be at the New Town Hall until October 30. It will also be part of this year's Designblok, which starts on October 4.
