An Atlas of Fabrication was the title of the exhibition by the Berlin studio Barkow Leibinger presented at one of the world's most respected architectural schools.
The exhibition focused on capturing the remarkable approach of this unconventional studio using models, experimental structures, and material studies for presentation. Playing with the elementary nature of surfaces, properties, character, and boundaries of material application utilizing innovative technological processes of the 21st century - these are the main features of this studio based in Germany.
Both founding members - Frank Barkow and Regina Leibinger - studied at the AA in the late 90s. Their initial passion for material representation in architecture evolved into a fundamental ideological approach that has become the characteristic handwriting of the studio.
The exhibition highlights the interconnection of architectural ideas and material execution in the already realized works of the studio, which stand out from the standard of the contemporary architectural scene. The typological range of the studio includes everything from buildings for cultural purposes to industrial and logistics centers. The stylization of their approach is formally presented through other geometric structures, including the use of pentagons applied both in construction and in the expressively impactful soffit of the ceilings, as confirmed by one of their latest realized works - a restaurant and auditorium on a student campus in the German city of Ditzingen.
The AA publishing house on this occasion published a comprehensive monograph mapping the work of the Barkow Leibinger studio.
