Students of Brno Architecture Propose New Uses for the Olomouc Fortress
Twenty-four student projects from the Faculty of Architecture at VUT Brno aim to come up with ideas on how to breathe new life into the ring of defensive fortifications surrounding Olomouc. The architects leverage the potential of the landscape on the outskirts of the city, where a unique collection of twenty-one advanced forts is scattered.
Particular attention is given to the real utilization of the fort on Šibeniční vrch in collaboration with Olomouc developers. A group of five student proposals offers the transformation of a historical redoubt from the 19th century in the midst of a newly growing residential area into a new Olomouc market, an experiential leisure center for a healthy lifestyle, or a conceptual vault intended for the general public as well as specialized art collections.
“The city is currently seeking its new identity, which cannot be based solely on a strong history, but rather on the future re-embraced by the periphery, where for decades a unique system of fortifications has been lying dormant. It shares, along with highways, shopping, and logistics centers, the residual territory at the edge of the city and landscape, connected only by a strip of compromised black earth. And it is here, in this re-embraced system, that nineteen students found new life and the necessary organization. The adapted forts become focal points for new development and an unexpected link for the city, the periphery, and the surrounding villages, for people and wildlife, for public activities and a responsible approach to the future of the depleted Haná,” explains the background of the exhibition's creation architect Vojtěch Jemelka from the Faculty of Architecture at VUT.
On January 25, 2022, a public presentation of student works will take place in the Molitor Library (Kosinova 7, Olomouc). The exhibition will last until March 6, 2022.

13:00 - 15:00 - Public presentation of student works from Atelier Marek + Mléčka. Five proposals for the possible use of the fort on Šibeniční vrch.
