Dvůr Králové nad Labem (Trutnov region) – The winner of the architectural competition for the reconstruction and utilization of the former Mayer factory in the center of Dvůr Králové nad Labem in the Trutnov region is the design by Rudolf Grimm from GRIMM Architekti studio in Žďár nad Sázavou. The competition, announced in spring, received 11 proposals, and the victory in the competition is associated with a reward of 900,000 crowns, as reported today by representatives of the town hall to ČTK. This was the first architectural competition organized by the city.

"The proposals were to architecturally, artistically, and operationally connect the area to the historical center of the city and open it to the public. At the same time, the proposal was to facilitate pedestrian links between Republic Square and Tylová Street,” stated Mayor Jan Jarolím (ANO).

The jury appreciated the winning proposal for its well-thought-out concept of urban design, including connections to adjacent public spaces, and the simple and clear arrangement of the entire area around the central courtyard.

The area, covering 5,500 m², has several buildings. The design preserves the three-story reinforced concrete hall of the former textile factory and the adjacent two-story entrance building. It also preserves the access and exit from the area from Republic Square and Tylová Street, thus creating pedestrian connections. This maintains the traffic serviceability of neighboring properties that are not owned by the city.

The winning proposal includes a multipurpose hall for culture and education with a capacity of 500 seated spectators with the stage placed in the hall and a capacity of 700 spectators if the stage is in the backstage area, with the possibility of variable arrangements. "It also includes a space for an educational entertainment center with an area of 730 m² and a space for a children's amusement park with an area of 730 m². The puppet theater has a proposed capacity of 80 seated spectators,” said town hall spokesperson Miroslava Kameníková.

The number of parking spaces proposed underground is 88 and 20 parking spaces on the ground level. "We will negotiate with the authors of the winning proposal about the terms of the contract for the development of project documentation for both the construction permit and the selection of the contractor and the realization of construction works, as well as about the price and deadlines. Construction should commence within two to four years,” stated Jarolím.

The preliminary price offer from the winning bidder for the subsequent design work and author supervision is 19 million crowns excluding VAT, and the investment costs are around 350 million crowns.

The proposal from the Brno studio Drawcon came in second place and will receive a reward of 800,000 crowns, while the third place goes to the proposal from the Prague studio MS architekti, which will receive a reward of 400,000 crowns. According to the town hall, there is currently a period for submitting objections to the results. "Within three months, the city will organize an exhibition of all competition proposals in the premises of the Mayer factory,” said Kameníková.

The Mayer factory on Republic Square was purchased by the town of Dvůr Králové in 2017 for 9.4 million crowns from the local cooperative Vánoční ozdoby. The factory buildings are located in the city heritage zone.
