Brno – The Office of the Architect of the City of Brno (KAM) today launched an international urban-traffic-architectural competition that will determine the design of the new main train station in Brno. It has invited the authors of the main train stations in Vienna, Berlin, and Amsterdam to participate. Other interested parties can apply until September 25. The jury will choose the winner in June of next year, stated KAM spokesperson Jana Běhalová in a press release today.
"We will invite directly three foreign architectural studios that have experience with large transport structures to the competition. The competition jury will select nine additional competitors from the submitted portfolios," said KAM director Michal Sedláček.
In the first phase, twelve competitors will develop their designs, and four of them will be selected by the committee for the second round. "They will refine their designs in greater detail; the jury will choose the winner and determine the rankings for second, third, and fourth places. The evaluation of the designs in the first phase will take place in February, and in the second phase in June 2021," added Běhalová.
Competitors must, among other things, design the station building including the roofing and the appearance of the platforms, the railway body and bridge structures, the layout of the internal spaces, and the placement of the main departure hall. They must not forget about parking, a bike storage facility, or pedestrian connections.
The new train station will be located by the river at the site of today’s lower station. It will be placed on a bridge seven meters above the ground. The location of the station was decided by the city and county representatives in 2018.
