In connection with the public debate about whether an architectural competition should be announced for the planned Czech Television studio in Brno or whether it can be skipped, the spokesperson for CT, Ms. Hana Orošová, contributed a remark likely intended as a main argument for why the studio is not suitable for a competition: …."The new studio will be more aligned with industrial buildings, as it will include multifunctional universally usable studio halls."
Yes, the spokesperson is correct that the television studio is somewhat close to industrial architecture. However, this does not state that it is not a topic of architecture or that architects do not commonly address such topics. The theme of television studios is an annual focus of both graduate and diploma works at all schools of architecture, including technological concepts. Therefore, it is not a justification for why there is no competition for the new Brno studio.
Allow us a brief recap. In the Czech Republic, as well as in several European countries, more studios have been built whose designs came from architectural competitions. One of the first is the renowned studio Maison de Radio de France on the banks of the Seine in Paris by architect Bernard from 1951. One of the most stunning works of post-war architecture, which has also served and continues to serve well. Earlier, however, a radio studio designed by Hans Poelzig was constructed during the interwar period (1929-1931).
However, architectural competitions also took place in our country for later built studios in Prague (1961) and in Bratislava's Mlynská dolina (1964). The truth is that the Prague competition likely only included the configuration of buildings. However, this was different in Austria, where architect Gustav Peichl won the competition in 1969 with his design for the first regional studio, which was then implemented in several variations in most federal capitals.
Very recently, the DR television, radio, and recording studio was opened in Copenhagen, which resulted from an international architectural competition.

Overview of studios from competitions:
1929 Radio Berlin (Hanz Poelzig)
1952 Maison de Radio France Paris, competition 1952 (Henry Bernard)
1961 Competition for a television studio in Prague (acad. arch. Jiří Holý)
1964 Architectural competition for a studio in Mlynskej dolina Bratislava
1969 Architectural competition for regional studios in Austria (Gustav Peichl)
1993 Narrow competition Villa VPRO Hilversum (MVRDV)
2002 International architectural competition for the studios of Radio and TV DR Copenhagen (Vilhelm Lauritzen)
