Hradec Králové - The Královéhradecká city hall announced an architectural competition for the new design of October 28 Square in the city center. The city hall aims to evaluate the competition this May, and the reconstruction of the square should be completed within the current electoral term. This was stated today by Deputy Mayor Josef Malíř. "We consider October 28 Square to be an important urban space, which is why we announced an architectural competition for its new design, which should address greenery, surfaces, and furniture," Malíř said. According to estimates, the costs for the modifications could exceed 20 million crowns. The last study of modifications to the square dates back to the early 1990s, when the construction of a fast food outlet was planned; however, a wave of protests from local residents arose against this proposal. The Hradec city hall completed repairs to Malé náměstí in the historical center of the city last July, which cost over 40 million crowns. Preparations are also underway for the repair of Velké náměstí, which is expected to start by the end of 2010. The cheapest option for the repair estimates costs of approximately 80 million crowns. By the autumn of this year, builders are also expected to complete modifications to Riegrovo náměstí in front of the Czech Railways station.
