The company Arsenale di Venezia, which was created for the purpose of revitalizing the historic Venetian Arsenal, is announcing an architectural competition for young architects under the age of 41.

The Arsenal was established 900 years ago. Its greatest expansion occurred between the 16th and 17th centuries, when shipyards for the fleet of the Venetian Republic were located here. Due to the economic and military importance of naval forces for Venice, Galileo Galilei, who worked at the arsenal, proclaimed it a place where "the foundations of freedom and nobility of the Republic were laid." The whole area has been preserved in nearly its original form.
The vast complex was used by the navy until the 1960s, and after its abandonment, it began to deteriorate very quickly.
In the future, the area with extraordinary potential should function as a cultural and educational center. Its revitalization has been taken on by the Italian company Arsenale di Venezia, which wants to give a chance to young and beginning architects and therefore announces a competition with four topics:
  • revitalization of one building for the needs of the entrance part of the area with necessary facilities and a "business incubator"
  • adaptation of another building for the support of the entire area (catering, etc.)
  • design for the revitalization of the tower Porta Nuova, which should create exhibition spaces and offices
  • new bridge for pedestrians.
Registration for the competition is possible until August 3, 2006.

More information for Italian-speaking architects can be found here> (a complete English version is still in progress).

In Venice, there is also another conceptual architectural competition Venice 2006. The subject is to design a typical symbol - in this case a bridge - of the city's structure with great historical value - in this case Venice - which would allow for a new way of use - a museum. Details can be found on the websites www.arquitectum.com .
