With the approaching deadline for applications for the 4th year of the Czech Architecture Award (ČCA), the chairperson of the jury is known. The jurors have elected Imke Woelk, a German architect and architecture theorist, to this position from among themselves.
Architect Imke Woelk studied architecture at the Technical University of Braunschweig and at IUAV in Venice. In Braunschweig, she also studied fine arts. After graduating, she worked abroad for four years, first in the studio of Massimiliano Fuksas in Rome and later in London at William Alsop's office. Upon returning to Berlin, she founded the studio IMKEWOELK + Partner with Martin Cors. Imke Woelk is also significantly active in the academic sphere as an architecture theorist. Since 1998, she has been working at the Technical University of Berlin, where she completed her dissertation in 2010. The topic was the uses of the main pavilion of the New National Gallery in Berlin by Mies van der Rohe. In the field of research, Imke Woelk works on rational and intuitive patterns within communication processes. Since 2001, her research has focused on specific space and its shaping and interpretation. In 2015, with the support of a research grant from the Danish Arts Foundation, she examined the role of nature in the work of Danish architect Jørn Utzon. She is also engaged in scenography and exhibition design. For her work, Imke Woelk received the Rom-Preis in 2003, the highest possible award for artists living in Germany. During her studies in Rome, she focused on conceptual creation and addressed central themes of contemporary space. Imke Woelk's practical architectural work is also highly regarded. Even as a student, she won the "Premio Internazionale di Architettura Andrea Palladio" for her design of the residential building "The Eagle" (together with Dirk Alten). In 2016, she became a member of the advisory board for architecture and urban planning in the cultural department of the Berlin Senate.
International Expert Jury of the ČCA Imke Woelk will evaluate the work of Czech architects together with six other qualified foreign experts. The jury member of the Czech Architecture Award for 2019 is Teresa Borsuk, a British architect with extensive practice, who was also awarded by the Architects' Journal as British Architect of the Year 2015 for her efforts to improve gender equality in practice. Another member of this year's international expert jury is Swiss multidisciplinary theorist Michael Jakob. He deals with landscape, aesthetics, and design, as well as literary comparative studies and editorial and journalistic work. The jury will also have a representative from Israel this year, in the person of architect Etan Kimmel, who has a diverse portfolio of award-winning projects. Also repeatedly a member of the jury is Hungarian architect, and this year is no different, as Iván Nagy has enriched the jury. He is a leading Hungarian practicing architect, but also an academic. This year's jury will also have a representative from France. Architect Julien Rousseau studied and worked in Great Britain and continues to work on international projects today. Neighboring Slovakia will be represented by the well-known architect Michal Sulo in the Czech environment. His office SLLA Architects received a Finalist award in the Czech Architecture Award 2017 for the realization of the Máj Community Center.
Who can apply for the Czech Architecture Award? In 2019, authors can submit their works realized in the territory of the Czech Republic in the last five years to the competition showcase, which intentionally has no set categories. This means completed buildings constructed from January 2014 to December 2018. Works that were shortlisted in last year's and the year before's competition are excluded from submission. The Czech Chamber of Architects continues to offer free registration for the competition. Architects can submit their projects using a simple online form by April 1, 2019.
