Prague - Prague 6 has elected a team that will participate in the preparation of an international urban planning competition for the renovation of Victory Square. The team will include urban planners, traffic engineers, and experts from academia, including from the Czech Technical University (ČVUT) and the University of Chemistry and Technology (VŠCHT), which owns land in the square. This is based on a resolution from the council. The competition will be announced in cooperation with the Institute of Planning and Development during the year 2017.
The working group, along with architects from the Institute of Planning and Development of the Capital City (IPR) and politicians, should define the assignment and competition conditions by April. "We need a conceptual solution that will enhance the function of the square and return as much space as possible to the people," said Deputy for Spatial Development Petra Kolínská (SZ). No one has yet indicated when the square will be transformed according to the proposals.
The square is not structurally completed. The planned construction of the so-called Ice Bear, which was supposed to completely change the character of the square, has previously sparked discussion. The project ultimately fell through. However, construction will still take place in the gap. The area is also burdened by a high volume of traffic. The situation worsened in connection with the Blanka tunnel complex. Prague 6 has been calling for a solution for several months. So far, only partial measures have been introduced.
Victory Square was established in 1925 and currently several roads - Evropská, Čs. armády, Jugoslávských partyzánů, Svatovítská, and Dejvická - converge on it. Throughout its history, it has had several names, including being called October Revolution from 1952 to 1990. The Ministry of Defense building stands on the square. During the previous regime, there was a statue of V. I. Lenin, whose pedestal served skateboarders after the Velvet Revolution.
