Prague - The future appearance of Prague's Vítězné náměstí will be determined by an urban transport competition. This was announced today by the mayor of Prague 6, Ondřej Kolář (TOP 09). Over the coming months, the city will prepare the competition so it can be announced in the fall. Experts should primarily address the traffic situation related to the opening of the Blanka tunnel. Among the most serious problems, according to the mayor, are the non-functional traffic intersection where cars meet pedestrians. The tram stop and the metro exits are inappropriately situated. The public space is not adequately utilized. There is a lack of urban furniture. The state of the square is lamentable, the city hall claims. "The opening of the Blanka tunnel complex in 2015 dramatically worsened the traffic load on Vítězné náměstí and the surrounding main roads. We are looking for solutions for incremental improvements that are truly ineffective without a conceptual solution," said Deputy Mayor Martin Polách. "In the long run, there will also be additions of buildings and the completion of the perimeter of Vítězné náměstí, for which a comprehensive solution should already be prepared," he added. This also concerns the controversial project Lední medvěd, which the company PPF Real Estate wanted to build in the gap on the square. The city hall and the company are suing each other over the construction.
