Prague – The city hall of Prague 1 announced a tender for adjustments to Cihelná Park, which is located in Malá Strana between the Mánes Bridge and Cihelná Street. As reported by ČTK from the public contracts bulletin, the estimated value of the contract is 24 million crowns. The project includes a new cycle path, landscaping, pathways, and benches with a view of the Vltava River. Prague 1 is also preparing modifications to other public spaces, with a recent project at Smetanovo nábřeží drawing criticism due to the plan to fell a tree.

The area bounded by the Mánes Bridge, Cihelná Street, and the Vltava embankment is currently more of an unmaintained area than a park. Following the renovations, new pathways, benches, a children's playground, a recreational staircase, and an asphalt cycle path will be added, leading under the bridge from Strakova akademie and continuing to U Lužického semináře Street.

According to earlier statements by Mayor Petr Hejma (STAN), the trees will be preserved, and at least ten new ones will be added. The city hall is also preparing a new retaining wall towards the Vltava, on top of which there will be a series of benches overlooking the river and Charles Bridge.

The city hall of Prague 1 is also planning further modifications to public spaces. For instance, plans include alterations to Na Františku Park, located between Dvořákovo nábřeží and the Convent of St. Agnes, or the entire length of Na Poříčí Street from Náměstí Republiky to Florenc. The capital city also plans changes to Revoluční Street, where the tram stop is to be relocated in the future, sidewalks will be widened, and a new small square will be created.

The city council also aims to start modifications to Smetanovo nábřeží this year, which will include, among other things, a new stop for Karlovy lázně towards Staroměstská, sidewalk expansion, additional benches, the construction of a cycle path, and the planting of a row of trees. Prague 1 has already begun a separate project at Karlovy lázně concerning the grassy area nicknamed Anenský trojúhelník. This is set to disappear, and a paved small square will be created in its place. The construction company has already started with the excavation of the soil.

The plan has faced criticism in recent weeks from local residents and the opposition in Prague 1, especially due to the plan to cut down a silver maple that stands in the way of the planned passage through the riverside wall to the river. Last week, the Czech Environmental Inspection suspended the felling because a Eurasian collared dove is nesting in the tree. The city hall must wait for the bird with its young to leave the nest in the fall before proceeding with the felling. The issue will be addressed by the Prague 1 council in an extraordinary meeting on Friday.
