The conceptual study of the Černý Most bus terminal will be developed by the prominent Czech architectural office re:architekti. The studio has previously successfully completed the bus station in Mnichovo Hradiště, for example. The selection process was overseen by the Institute of Planning and Development of Prague (IPR). The study is expected to be completed next May.
“We decided to pay more attention to this busy place and will try to rectify some shortcomings that have developed over years of operation. The goal is to make the journey home, to shopping, or just transferring between the metro and buses more pleasant for people,” says Petr Hlaváček, Deputy Mayor for Spatial Development.
The Černý Most bus terminal and its surroundings have required overall revitalization for many years. The main issues at this heavily trafficked transfer point include the management and maintenance of the terminal and poor-quality public spaces around it.
“Černý Most is the symbolic eastern gateway to Prague. It is one of the most frequented transportation hubs, and at the same time, it is also a place that currently does not evoke positive feelings. Therefore, the study will particularly focus on opening the terminal to pedestrians and improving and simplifying transfers to different modes of transport,” explains Adam Scheinherr, Deputy Mayor for Transport.
Currently, IPR, in cooperation with the Technical Administration of Roads (TSK), the Public Transit Company (DPP), and ROPID is preparing quick measures to at least partially improve the current dire state of the terminal. “I am pleased that we are beginning to address transport terminals, which are crucial for effective travel around the city. Last year, the city succeeded in approving a new design for the transport terminal in Smíchov. Now we have taken a significant step towards transforming another important transfer hub, Černý Most, which undoubtedly deserves it,” comments Ondřej Boháč, director of IPR on the planned changes.
However, it is also important to address the long-term development of the terminal. The conceptual study prepared by the Czech studio re:architekti will address the terminal as a whole. The study will propose rules for systematic management, care, and maintenance. It will focus on the terminal itself as well as the public spaces in its immediate vicinity. It will also examine possibilities for further urban development in connection with this transportation hub.
“Černý Most is an extremely interesting task for us because it connects the themes of the identity of the city of Prague (through its role as a gateway to the city), the identity of the housing estate through its role as a center in the daily lives of local residents, as well as issues concerning the management of almost contemporary architecture in terms of moral, aesthetic, and environmental aspects.” says Jan Vlach from re:architekti.
As part of the preparation of the conceptual study, there will also be a meeting with the public. Citizens will have the opportunity to share their suggestions and observations with the developers. Before the study's proposal is submitted, citizens will have the chance to express their opinions on it. It is anticipated that the conceptual study will be completed in May of next year.
