The Chýně-Hostivice Association of Municipalities announced an architectural competition for a new school in May of this year. The building and the adjacent public space are intended to become a new local center that will connect the residents of both municipalities. Among the six competition proposals, the jury was most impressed by the solution presented by the team ov architekti s.r.o. All proposals will be displayed from November 17 in front of the Primary School in Chýně, and from December 8 in the atrium of the Primary School in Hostivice.

“The architectural competition for a significant public building is a novelty for Hostivice. The submitted proposals clearly show how diverse the responses to the same brief can be and how important design competitions are for selecting the best solution. A quality school architecture will help give importance to the peripheral part of the town and firmly anchor it within the municipality's structure,” says Klára Čápová, the mayor of Hostivice. “I believe that the winning solution, with its complexity and careful focus on all users of the building, will bring a higher quality of life to the residents of both Chýně and Hostivice,” she adds.

The competition jury, which evaluated the proposals, included representatives from the city as well as independent architects and urban planners. The jury ranked the proposals as follows:
1st place: ov architekti s.r.o.
2nd place: Pelčák a partner architekti, s.r.o.
3rd place: Hejdová Duba architekti s.r.o.
Without awards: Kuba & Pilař architekti s.r.o.; Roman Brychta Architekti, s.r.o.; Rusina Frei, s.r.o.

The jurors evaluated not only the comprehensive qualities of the architectural proposal and its construction, material, and technological solutions. They also assessed urban and traffic solutions, public space design, as well as the sustainability and economic feasibility of the entire project.

“We appreciated the winning design mainly for its overall balance. It works very sensitively with the sloped terrain, creating pleasant spaces around the school building of various types—some more open to the public and others more sheltered for students and teachers. The building is adapted for child users, yet it will also serve the entire community well due to its cleverly designed internal layout. A major advantage of the winning solution is the separate sports center and adequately sized parking areas. The design also best fulfilled the competition criteria set,” summarized the jury's verdict its chairman Ing. arch. Ondřej Píhrt.

The mayor of Chýně, Anna Chvojková, is also satisfied with the outcome of the competition: “I was pleased that the winning studio ov architekti focused primarily on users and functional utilization of such a significant building. At the same time, it brings a modern and attractive element into the dynamically growing Chýně. I believe that the building will serve not only as a school but also as a significant sports, cultural, and above all, community hub for the residents of both Chýně and Hostivice.”

All competition proposals will be available for viewing from November 17 in front of the Primary School in Chýně and from December 8 in the atrium of the Primary School in Hostivice.

Next will follow the drafting of the individual stages of the project documentation. The start of construction work is anticipated no earlier than in 2023, with the opening of the school following a year later. The estimated investment costs for the realization are 500 million CZK excluding VAT.
