Prague - This year's National Architecture Award was won by the sports hall in Dolní Břežany near Prague, designed by the SPORADICAL studio. A five-member international jury selected the winner from 42 finalists. More than 160 studios with over 200 projects realized in the Czech Republic between January 2017 and March 2018 entered the 25th edition of the competition. The organizers from the Association of Architects informed ČTK about this today.

The new sports hall next to the elementary school was opened in Dolní Břežany last November. It serves for physical education classes, local sports clubs, and recreational athletes. "The shape of the hall is rounded, smooth, and abstract. The dome brings the scale closer to the human, the metallic surface reflects the surroundings, and the boundary between the sky and the roof is unclear. The building masks its true dimensions and appears smaller than it actually is," stated the competition organizers.

The jury, which included architects from Great Britain, Austria, Slovakia, Estonia, and the Czech sculptor and artist František Skála, also awarded five main prizes. They were awarded to the multifunctional building DRN on Národní Street in Prague, the new St. Wenceslas Church in Sazovice in the Zlín region, the wooden Doubravka lookout tower in Kyje, the multifunctional building Vista Optik in Valašské Meziříčí, and the administrative building in Strančice near Prague. An honorary mention was awarded to the project 8smička Humpolec and the Educational Complex of UTB in Zlín, which involved architect Eva Jiřičná.

In addition to the National Architecture Award, the Czech Architecture Award is also presented annually, organized by the Czech Chamber of Architects since 2016. This year, 145 architectural realizations are competing for this award, and the winner will be announced in November.
