Brno - A new park is set to be created in the coming years on the site of the former ash dump of the Brno heating plant in Hády. A jury composed of landscape architects, urban planners, and architects selected the winning design from six teams made up of students from Czech universities. Today, representatives of the city, the heating plant, and the organization Studentské Brno presented the winner.

Mayor Petr Vokřál (ANO) stated that initial work on the new park should take place this year. "Let’s not imagine that there will suddenly be a new park there next summer. The creation of the park needs to take place over several years for it to have value," added Deputy Mayor and Chairman of the Board of Teplárny Brno Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL).

Representative of Studentské Brno Michal Hořínek mentioned that the project clearly shows how active students, academics, city representatives, and companies can collaborate on the city's development. "The fact that we have actually started working together on the Hády Park demonstrates that this collaboration works very well and has great potential," he stated.

The winning team consisted of a group of students from the Faculty of Architecture of the Brno University of Technology and Mendel University. The winning team will receive a reward of 50,000 CZK. "The area attracted us with its character. We decided to create three loops, each of which will have a specific function. The middle loop will be more of a quiet area, the outer loop will be for sports, where inline skaters, runners, and cyclists can meet, and the middle loop will be recreational, where people can relax," said one of the competition winners, Peter Mezei. According to him, modifications to the terrain will not be invasive.

However, the plan is only at the beginning. "We will agree with the winners to involve more experienced architects who can help them refine the design into a final concept. The jury also wanted to connect the individual competition designs, as it saw some interesting elements in other designs as well. We want the best aspects to be incorporated into the winning concept and to develop it into some documentation for the approval of land use and building permits and for the actual implementation," Hladík stated.
