Brno - The Brno Municipality has announced an architectural competition for the revitalization of the courtyard between Francouzská, Bratislavská, Stará, and Hvězdová streets. The buildings, which were previously used for leisure activities and as storage, are to be replaced by residential buildings designed as starter homes for young families or for seniors, according to the Public Contract Bulletin. The block of houses is also set to become a thoroughfare. The goal is also to create a space for leisure activities, which is currently lacking here.

The courtyard is located in the Brno-Centrum district and is part of the so-called Brno Bronx. This area of street development from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries has undergone rapid construction changes in the last decade. Many old houses have been renovated by the city or private investors, while some have been replaced with new buildings. The city is still considering the demolition of some buildings. Three houses with 85 apartments are to be gradually created. Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL) previously stated that costs are estimated at 130 million crowns.

Teams of architects can apply to participate in the competition until September 4, with a site visit scheduled for September 27. The judging panel will then meet on November 20 to review the proposals. The winning team will receive a reward of 300,000 crowns, with the three most successful teams taking home a total of 660,000 crowns. The jury will consist of architects and city representatives. Construction could begin next year.

Two years ago, the Hvězdička park was established in the courtyard, featuring playgrounds, sports fields, and a low-threshold center.

The price of apartments in the area is gradually rising and they are in demand, as they are within walking distance from the center. However, there is a lack of greenery and other leisure activities.
